The municipality of Bechwet was established in 1964 by presidential decree, and its first municipal council was elected in 1998.

It has nine members.

As for Bechwet, it is a town located on a hill in the northern Bekaa and is distinguished by its tourist geographical location. In the middle of it is the miraculous shrine of Our Lady of Bechwet, which is well known and has been classified as one of the international religious shrines that millions of believers visit annually in search of blessings. You will also find in it an ancient spring dating back to the Roman era, and several Grottoes and caves. All this makes it a popular destination for tourists.

There are many rest houses, guest houses, a hotel, a gas station, restaurants, an internal security force center, a civil defense center, a public school, a sports club, and many religious and social associations.
